Abstract

1,071,444. Stop motions; alarms. S. PEYER. Dec. 15, 1964 [Dec. 17, 1963], No. 51077/64. Headings DID and D1F. Apparatus for monitoring the presence of textile fibre strand 1 such as yarns, slivers or bands and particularly strands with low strength comprises a mechanical feeler member, e.g. a wire 3 engaging the strand, an electric system for oscillating the feeler and a transducer system associated with the feeler whereby during normal operation the oscillations of the feeler are suppressed by contact with the strand and during absence of the strand the resonant oscillations of the feeler build up to produce an electric signal at the output of the transducer to indicate the interruption of the strand. The signal may actuate an acoustical or optical signal or a stop motion. As shown the feeler 3 is rigidly supported in one arm 2a of a V-shaped core 2 and passes adjacent the other arm 2b about which there is a coil 4 fed with A.C. current of a frequency corresponding to the natural resonance frequency of the feeler. The end 3b lies adjacent an air gap 8 in an iron core 6 carrying a coil 7, which is connected to an amplifier 15, a rectifier 16 and a relay 17. The core 6 is pre-magnetized so that vibration of feeler 3 induces currents in coil 7 and causes relay 17 to operate a switch 18 to actuate a signal or stop motion. In a further form (Fig. 2, not shown) there is no independent A.C. source for coil (4) but the coil is fed via an amplifier from a piezoelectric transducer which has a feeler contacting wire (3), thus a positive feed back system is set up to produce growing vibration and voltage once undamped vibration of the feeler (3) is allowed. Connections are also made from this circuit to a rectifier and relay so that absence of the strand results in actuation of the relay and the initiation of a signal or stop motion. In the forms the feeler may be a leaf spring or torsional vibrator with radial arm. The oscillating system may employ the reversed piezoelectric effect.
