Abstract

775,432. Electromechanical filters. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 3, 1955 [June 23, 1954], No. 18483/54. Class 40 (8). An electromechanical filter comprises a circumferentially-polarized cylinder 1 of magnetostrictive ceramic material, e.g. " ferroxcube," supported upon an axial wire 2 for vibration in a torsional mode. The cylinder is carried from the wire by means of a borate bead 3 fused to both members, the area of contact between the bead and the cylinder being kept as small as possible. In order to key the bead firmly to the wire a few turns of fine copper wire may be wound upon it. Instead, the wire may be thickened or a short sleeve provided. The cylinder is surrounded by a glass envelope 7 which also encloses annular plugs 5, 6 of non- magnetostrictive " ferroxcube "material. These plugs ensure constant coupling conditions between the coil 10 and the cylinder 1 irrespective of the resonant frequency of the cylinder. The coil 10 comprises an input winding and an output winding having considerably more turns than the input winding. Circumferential polarization of the cylinder 1 is achieved by passing a current pulse along the wire 2.
