Abstract
1,071,278. Electrophysical measurement. SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1966 [Feb.12, 1965], No.4362/66. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for warming blood wherein the blood is warmed by an induction heating device comprises means whereby the change of impedance of the blood due to its rise in temperature is effective to terminate the heating when the blood has reached the desired temperature. Blood 6 contained in a flask 5 is placed in a receptacle 46 wherein is situated an induction heating coil 2, the presence of the flask 5 in the receptacle 6 causing the closing of a switch in the power supply to the apparatus, which supply may be rectified alternating current. The heating coil 2 forms one arm of a bridge circuit, other arms of which comprise resistors 8-12 the resistor 10 being variable to set the desired final blood temperature. The heating coil 2 is fed by way of an oscillator including a thermionic valve or semi-conductor device 1 and variable capacitors 3, 4. As the blood 6 warms its resistance decreases thus increasing the load on the oscillator which unbalances the bridge circuit until, when the blood has reached the set temperature, the unbalance is sufficient to energize a relay coil 14 across the bridge diagonal whereby to terminate the heating, an indicator 13 registering the temperature of the blood. A short circuited turn 47 spaced from the heating coil 2 is provided around the neck of the flask 5 so as to provide a sharp definition of the magnetic field produced by the coil 2 and prevent over heating of the blood at the surface of the flask. Various safety devices and indicating lamps are provided and the preferred operating frequency of the oscillator is between 30-35 megacycles per second.
