Abstract
1,071,155. Wells &c. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. Nov. 5, 1963 [Nov. 5. 1962], No. 43601/63. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F2] A platform 40 may be lowered from a vessel 20 and detachably secured to the fixed base 30 of a submerged wellhead 24. The platform is lowered on a drill pipe to the base down a line 28 and is finally positioned by posts 32, 36, 38 mounted on the base. The platform has posts 50, 52, 54 connected to the vessel by lines 58. A wrench socket on a drill pipe is guided by the lines 58 to the vicinity of the platform, and is rotated to turn latches 78 to secure the platform to the base. A terminal fitting 90 for a bundle 122 of submarine conduits is lowered down the lines 58 and fixed to an upstanding pipe 98 on the base, a line 114 extending from the vessel through the fitting and having its bight connected to a plug 120 at the end of the bundle which is at a location remote from the wellhead. The plug is hauled into the fitting by the line 114, and fixed to the fitting by a locking screw 144. The bundle comprises conduits for gas, oil and hydraulic fluid for actuating a well control head 162, and has at its end a part 154 of a multiple passage coupling 156. A part 158 of a similar multiple passage coupling 160 is fixed to the wellhead, and the head 162 is located between the couplings 156, 160. The head 162 is connected by a tool joint 208 to a drill pipe 44 and guided into place over the wellhead by a spider 210 engaging the lines 58. The coupling 160 is first connected, and the upper part of the coupling 156 is lowered onto the part 154 and connected, a television camera 236 supported by the spider 210 facilitating the latter connection. Both couplings are of similar construction. The coupling (160) (Fig. 12, not shown) comprises articulated members (178) which are tightened into grooves (194), (170) on the upper and lower parts of the coupling by a left and right hand screw forming the spindle of a worm wheel (196) which is rotated by a wrench socket (64) on a drill pipe. In a modification the platform is connected to the base by hydraulic rams which are actuated by fluid from a drill pipe which engages with sockets in the platform, and the end of the bundle is supported by a sledge which serves to locate the coupling part 154.
