Abstract

1,070,548. Air intakes for gas turbine engines. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Jan. 6, 1966 [Nov.3, 1964], No. 44865/64. Heading F1G. [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] The position of a shock wave 10 occurring immediately in front of the air intake of a gas turbine engine 11 in an aircraft is detected by the change in resistance of a wire 18 mounted at an angle across the air intake, the change being due to the temperature on the upstream side of the shock wave being lower than that downstream of it. The wire forms one arm of a D. C. bridge, the output of which is amplified and used to control the position of shutters 13 so as to reduce the area of the intake as the airspeed rises, and so prevent the shock wave from entering the air intake. The wire 18 may be replaced by a foil or ceramic coated rod.
