Abstract
107,018. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (Assignees of Krippendorf, P.F. W.C.). June 8, 1916, [Convention date]. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles; soles; insoles.-In a process of manufacturing, under ordinary factory conditions, boots and shoes which will conform more accurately to the anatomical structure of the foot than the standard types at present worn, an insole 2, prepared in the usual way with a channel lip 4 and preferably provided with an additional area of stock 6 along its inside shank portion, is slit at its heel end by means of a " buttonhole " cut extending approximately centrally from the rear edge to the heel breast line, and is scored at 16 on its under or flesh side by a cut extending forwards of a perforation at the end of the cut, along the median line of the insole, through the shank substantially parallel to the in. side channel 4 to approximately the ball line. The parts 8, 10 formed by the cut are then opened out to cause the stock along the inside shank to buckle upwards and form an arch 18 corresponding substantially to the lateral and transverse conformation of the shank portion of the foot it is to support. The insole is locked in this position by a wedge 22 inserted between the members 8, 10 and secured by offsets 24 engaging notches 14 in the edge of the members, and by staples 26. The insole and an upper 30 are then assembled upon a last similar to an ordinary last except that its shank portion is somewhat deeper, the offset member 8 is trimmed to size, and the shoe is then lasted and welted in the ordinary manner. The usual filler 36 is then applied, and, if desired, a resilient shank 38 is secured in position. An outsole 42, which is buckled in a similar manner to the insole, is then secured to the welt by stitches 60, and finally a heel 62 is attached.
