Abstract

1,069,852. Screwdrivers. RUSSELL AUTOFEED SCREWDRIVERS Ltd. May 3, 1965 [April 28, 1964], No. 17498/64. Heading B3N. A screwdriver comprises an electric motor or air turbine (10), which drives a friction or dog clutch part (34), through a gear-box, and an output spindle (29), connected to the driven clutch part (36). The latter is mounted on a stub shaft (38) slidably journalled in a block (39) which is axially fixed in a sleeve (14) by a housing (26). An outer sleeve (18) is axially slidable on sleeve (14) but is restrained against rotation thereon by a spring-urged plunger (28) which engages in a slot, an adjustable stop (63) being provided for limiting the depth of driving. The outer sleeve supports a tubular member (21), the forward end (22) of which forms a screw-receiving chamber. Spindle (29) has a driving bit (30) of blade, or cruciform crosssection at one end, and is of non-circular crosssection at the other end, and fits into a correspondingly shaped bore (41) in shaft (38). Screw-supporting arms (49) are pivoted on a bush (47 at (50) and are actuated by a member (53), which is indexable to bring various control faces (54) into operation. In operation, a screw is placed in chamber (22) and engaged by blade (31). The forward face (60) of member (21) is placed against the work and members (31), (29), (38) and (37) are urged forwardly by spring (45). Thrust is exerted on motor (10), the screw is placed against the work and spindle (29) moves rearwardly to compress spring (45) to engage clutch (34), (36) and transmit the motor drive to the driver (31).
