Abstract

Surfactants suitable for emulsifying oils and petrol, and for the preparation of hand and face soaps, are prepared by reacting a dewatered polyethylene glycol ether containing at least 2 hydroxy groups and having a M. Wt. of at least 1000, with either (a) a mono-functional isocyanate having a hydrocarbon radical of more than 8 carbon atoms, or (b) a polyisocyanate and a monofunctional isocyanate, alcohol, mercaptan, amine or carboxylic acid having a hydrocarbon radical more than 8 carbon atoms, in such quantities that the hydrocarbon radical which contains more than 8 carbon atoms does not amount to more than 6% of the reaction product (see Division C3). In a typical Example (2), aqueous solutions of the reaction products of polyethylene glycol ether and tolylene diisocyanate with stearyl isocyanate and with myristyl isocyanate are used to produce heavy petrol and mineral oil emulsions respectively. In the same example a solid hand soap is produced by mixing the reaction product of polyethylene glycol ether, tolylene diisocyanate and stearyl isocyanate with talcum or betonite, quartz, an alkylaryl sulphonate and water.ALSO:Water-soluble surface-active compounds of formulae (a) R-Y-A-Y-R, (b) R-Y-(A-T)n-A-Y-R and (c) R-X-T-(A-T)n -X-R, wherein R is a hydrocarbon group having more than 8 carbon atoms, Y is -NHCO.O-, A is a polyethylene glycol ether chain, T is a diisocyanate residue, and X is -OCO.NH-, -S.CO-NH-, -NH.CO-NH-, >N.CO.NH- or -CO.NH-, n is 1-10, and the total amount of hydrocarbon radical which contains more than 8 carbon atoms is less than 6% by weight, are prepared by reacting a dewatered polyethylene glycol ether containing two hydroxyl groups and having a M.Wt. of at least 1000, with (a) a monofunctional isocyanate having a hydrocarbon radical containing more than 8 carbon atoms, (b) a diisocyanate having a hydrocarbon radical containing more than 8 carbon atoms, or (c) a diisocyanate and a monofunctional alcohol, mercaptan, phenol, or carboxylic acid or a primary or secondary monamine; in each case the NCO/active hydrogen ratio is 1:1. In a modification, the monoisocyanate used in (a) or the diisocyanate used in (b) or (c) may be partly or wholly replaced by a polyisocyanate.ALSO:A water-resistant coating for concrete, plaster, wood and paper is prepared by mixing the reaction product of polyethylene glycol, tolylene diisocyanate and myristyl alcohol with water, a latex of an acrylic acid butyl ester -acrylonitrile copolymer, and an aqueous dispersion of carbon black. (see Example 2).
