Diphenylmethan -4-isocyanat, 2-Methyl-4-cyclohexyIphenylisocyanat, Nonylphenylisocyanat, p-Dodecylphenylisocyanat.
Beispiel I

According to German Auslegeschrift 1 081 225, high molecular weight water-soluble polyether urethanes are obtained by reacting addition products with a molecular weight of at least 1000 from an alkylene oxide and from compounds having at least eight carbon atoms with at least eight carbon atoms and having only one reactive hydrogen atom.
According to this, polyalkylene glycol ethers with a molecular weight of at least 1000, which are characterized by the general formula RZA-OI-I, in which R is a hydrocarbon radical with at least eight carbon atoms, Z the atoms or atom groups -0-, -S-,> N- or -CO-O- and A is a polyalkylene glycol ether chain with the recurring component
EMI1.1
R '= hydrogen or an alkyl radical, mean reacted with polyisocyanates.
A characteristic of this manufacturing process for emulsifiers, which are suitable for the manufacture and stabilization of various types of disperse aqueous systems, such as emulsions or suspensions, is the use of polyalkylene glycol ethers which are monofunctional with respect to isocyanates and in which the hydrophobic radical R is replaced by the link Z, which does not contain a reactive hydrogen atom. is connected to the hydrophilic polyalkylene glycol chain A.
It has now been found that improved water-soluble or water-swellable surface-active urethane-containing polyethylene glycol ethers are obtained if, according to the invention, polyethylene glycol ethers containing at least two hydroxyl groups and having a molecular weight of at least 1000 are reacted with polyisocyanates in excess or in excess, with remaining hydroxyl groups being reacted with Monoisocyanates R-NCO and remaining isocyanate groups are saturated by reaction with alcohols R-OH or mercaptans R-SH, in which formulas R is a hydrocarbon radical containing more than eight carbon atoms, and that the monoisocyanates, alcohols and mercaptans are used in such amounts that the radical R does not constitute more than six percent by weight of the product obtained.
In particular, the compounds obtained according to the invention have the formula E- (AT), - AE (r where A is a polyethylene glycol ether chain with the recurring group -CH2CH2-O- and a molecular weight of at least 1000, T stands for the remainder of a polyisocyanate which is above each a urethane group is linked to the radicals A, n is an integer up to 10 and E is a group R-Z'- blocking the end groups, where R is a hydrocarbon radical containing at least 8 carbon atoms and Z 'is the link to the polymer chain, namely an oxygen or sulfur atom, and where the chain of the formula I can also be branched on the radical T via urethane groups.
In general, T corresponds to the remainder of a diisocyanate.
If the T corresponding diisocyanate is partially or completely replaced by an equivalent amount of a polyisocyanate with more than two NCO groups, then, depending on the amount and the functionality of the polyisocyanate, products which dissolve in water with a higher viscosity or also those are obtained, which are networked and therefore only swellable in water. Similar changes in the properties of the process products can also be achieved by combining polyethylene glycol ethers with more than two hydroxyl groups and di- and / or polyisocyanates. In contrast to the procedure in German Auslegeschrift 1 081 225, polyfunctional polyethylene glycol ethers are reacted with isocyanates, and the hydrophobic radical R is linked to the hydrophilic poly ethylene glycol ether chain A via a link -Z'-.
Polyethylene glycol ethers are addition products of ethylene oxide with compounds with at least two hydrogen atoms reactive with ethylene oxide and are suitable for the claimed process alone or in mixtures, provided they have a molecular weight of at least 1000. Other alkylene oxides, such as 1,2-propylene oxide, 1,2- and 2,3-butylene oxide, can also be used in minor proportions in the manufacture of the polyethylene glycol ethers; if they are used more, the water-solubility of the process products is no longer given. Suitable starter compounds for such addition products are polyols which are linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated and which can also contain heteroatoms such as sulfur or nitrogen and aromatic or hydroaromatic ring systems.
Examples of starting compounds are glycols of the general formula HO- (CH2) p-OH, where p is an integer from 1-12, 1,2-propylene glycol, 2,2-dimethyl-propanediol-1,3, octadecanediol 1,12, glycerol, trimethylolpropane, castor oil, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, butene-2-diol-1,4, octadecene-9,10-diol-1,12, 2,2'-hydroxy-diethyl sulfide, N-alkyldiethanolamines , Di- (2-hydroxy-ethyl-) - oleyl-amine, triethanolamine, cyclohexanediol 1,4, terephthalic acid-di- (2-hydroxyethyl ester), hydroquinone-di (-p- -hydroxyethyl) -ether.
Furthermore, polyfunctional phenols, oxycarboxylic acids, polycarboxylic acids, amino alcohols with primary or secondary amino groups, primary mono- and polyamines, diamines with primary, primary and secondary or with secondary amino groups and others can be used as starting components.
For the addition reaction, polyisocyanates of the aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic series can be used alone or in mixtures, e.g. Tetramethylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, 1,4- and 1,3-phenylene diisocyanate, tolylene-2,4- and tolylene-2,6-diisocyanate, as well as mixtures of both isomers, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 4,4-diphenyl-dimethyl- methane diisocyanate, naphthylene-1,5-diisocyanate, cyclohexane-1,4-diisocyanate, toluene-2,4,6-triisocyanate, biuret polyisocyanates obtained according to German patent specification 1101 394.
The hydrocarbon radical R having at least eight carbon atoms can be part of an alkylated phenol, a primary or secondary alcohol, mercaptan or an isocyanate. For the purposes of the invention, e.g. primary alcohols of the general formula CmH2m + lOH, where m is an integer greater than 8, furthermore 2,2-dimethyl-octanol-l, 2,2-dimethyl-decanol- 1, octadecen-9-ol- 1, pn- Nonylphenol, n-dodecyl mercaptan, monoisocyanates of the general formula CmH2m + 1NCO, where m is an integer greater than 8, oleyl isocyanate, B-decalyisocyanate, 4-dicyclohexyl methane isocyanate, propyl-oc-undecyl-methyl-diisocyanate, n-decyl-ether propyl isocyanate,
Diphenylmethane 4-isocyanate, 2-methyl-4-cyclohexylphenyl isocyanate, nonylphenyl isocyanate, p-dodecylphenyl isocyanate.
If the hydrophobic radical R is introduced into the process products via a monoisocyanate, the polyethylene glycol ethers must of course be reacted with a deficit of a polyisocyanate, so the NCO / OH ratio in this reaction step is less than 1.
The free hydroxyl groups still remaining after this reaction are then saturated with the monoisocyanate, so that in the end the NCO / OH balance of the overall reaction is 1. A separation of this procedure in two stages can be carried out, but it is not necessary experimentally, the polyethylene glycol ether can be reacted in one operation with a mixture of a polyisocyanate and a hydrophobic monoisocyanate, taking into account the requirements with regard to the type and amount of the components.
It is not absolutely necessary to maintain an NCO / OE ratio of 1 for the overall reaction; both below and above values, products that are thoroughly effective are obtained within the meaning of the invention. However, an NCO / OH ratio of 1 is preferred in the overall balance.
If the hydrophobic hydrocarbon radical R is introduced via an alcohol, a mercaptan, amine or a carboxylic acid, the polyethylene glycol ethers must of course be reacted with an excess of a polyisocyanate, so the NCO / OH ratio in this reaction step is greater than 1. The one after this Free NCO groups remaining in the reaction in the addition product are then saturated with the hydrophobic monofunctional components mentioned, so that the ratio of NCO / H is 1 in the overall balance of the reaction. This procedure also does not require separation in two stages; a mixture of the polyethylene glycol ether with the hydrophobic monofunctional component can be reacted with a polyisocyanate in one operation, again taking into account the requirements with regard to the type and amount of the components.
Adherence to the NCO / H ratio of 1 in the overall balance is preferred, but with lower or higher values, useful products are also obtained for the purposes of the invention.
Both when working with hydrophobic monoisocyanates and with hydrophobic alcohols, mercaptans, amines or carboxylic acids, monoisocyanates or alcohols, mercaptans, amines or carboxylic acids with fewer than 9 carbon atoms can also be used. By reducing the hydrophobic content in this way, desired changes in the properties of the end products, e.g.
an improved hydrophilicity achieved.
The polyethyleneglycol ethers are suitably carefully dehydrated before the isocyanate reaction, which is e.g. can be achieved by vacuum treatment at elevated temperatures of 100-120 or by treatment with solvents which form constant boiling mixtures with water. If the production of the polyethylene glycol ethers still contains alkalis or alkali metal salts of organic acids, neutralization with inorganic strong acids, such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, is usually necessary in order to avoid undesirable side reactions in the isocyanate addition reaction. On the other hand, these addition reactions can be influenced very effectively in the desired direction by known catalysts for isocyanate reactions. Examples include
Iron acetylacetonate, tin compounds such as dibutyltin dilaurate, magnesium oxide and tertiary amines.
Solvents which do not contain any isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms can also be used. Since the products of the process are water-soluble, solvents which are infinitely miscible with water, such as acetone, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane and dimethylformamide, are preferred.
The reaction is expediently carried out in stirred vessels, kneaders or autoclaves at room temperature or elevated temperatures, advantageously under a protective gas atmosphere of nitrogen or carbon dioxide at atmospheric pressure or higher pressures. The course of the reaction can easily be followed by determining the isocyanate content. Viscosity measurements can also be used to control the course of the reaction. In this case, the reaction is interrupted when aqueous solutions of the reaction mixture have reached a maximum viscosity. If the reaction mixture is further heated to a higher temperature after this maximum viscosity has been reached, an undesirable decrease in viscosity can sometimes be recorded as a consequence of oxidative degradation reactions.
By using small amounts of antioxidants such as Ditertiary butyhp-cresol. these side effects can be effectively prevented.
The aqueous, more or less strongly rheopexic solutions of the process products show a low tendency to foam when they have strong interfacial activity and are therefore ideally suited for the production of foam-free gasoline-in-water emulsions (O / W emulsions3 or as dispersants; their viscosity is determined by their type and The amount of reactants can be varied within wide limits and can be adjusted, for example, for 2% aqueous solutions between 10-10 000 cP / 250. Compared to previously known emulsifiers - also compared to those described in German Auslegeschrift 1 081 225 - the new compounds enable production of emulsions whose inner phase contains 20-30% less heavy gasoline with a comparable viscosity and the same amounts of emulsifier used.
Such emulsions are not only more economical in practice, they also give printing advantages, especially in pigment printing when using dispersed binders such as synthetic latices, due to the higher water reserve. Furthermore, the new substances can advantageously be used for dispersing inorganic and organic pigments in water and for producing non-settling pigment doughs of controllable viscosity; be set. They are also suitable for drilling oil; and pesticide emulsions, sizing agents, aqueous finishing and coating compounds for textiles or paper and as dispersants and protective colloids in the preparation of aqueous paints.
They can also be used in the production of concrete and screed, where their emulsifying and viscosity behavior has a plasticizing effect. The process products that are no longer soluble in water, but only swellable, are particularly suitable as soil improvers because of their excellent water-holding capacity. Since the rheopic viscosity behavior of these substances results in an intensive lubricating effect, they can advantageously be used together with other detergent substances and fillers as face and hand washing soaps.

A slight exothermic reaction is observed after mixing in the isocyanates. Further stirring for one hour at 100 "under nitrogen as protective gas leads to the end of the reaction. After cooling, the reaction product is a solid, easily breakable wax. A two percent aqueous solution of the same is completely clear and has a viscosity of 360 cm / 25" measured in the Höppler viscometer. .
In a solution of 8 parts of the process product in 442 tins of water, 550 parts of gasoline (boiling range 100-2500) are emulsified under a high-speed high-speed stirrer (3,000 rev / min.). It is irrelevant whether this gasoline contains no or, as is the case with commercially available types - white spirit - more or less large amounts of aromatics. The result is a paste the viscosity of which does not increase any further after stirring for three minutes and has a viscosity of about 6000 cP at room temperature.
The concentration of the emulsifying agent in the emulsion is 0.8%.
700 parts of gasoline are emulsified into a solution of 5 parts of the emulsifier in 295 parts of water. The viscosity of this permanent emulsion is - measured at room temperature and with a low shear stress - about 5000 cP.
