Abstract

Novel steroids of the formula <F\1> (wherein R is hydrogen or methyl; R1 is hydro gen, alkanoyl, aroyl, alkyl, aralkyl or cyclo alkyl; and Y is an unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbon group of 2 or 3 carbon atoms; R1 being other than hydrogen when Y is chlor ethynyl) are prepared from the corresponding 17-ones and organometallic derivatives of the group Y. The 17-ols so produced are esterified and etherified by standard procedures. Androst - 4 - en - 17 - one is prepared by oxidation of the 17b -ol. Trifluoropropyne is prepared from propiolic acid and sulphur tetrafluoride. The progestational steroids of the invention may be made up into pharmaceutical oral or parenteral compositions with suitable carriers.
