Abstract

1,068,246. Band clamps. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 11, 1964, No. 32670/64. Heading E2B. [Also in Division F2]. A pipe repair clamp. comprises a flexible pipe encircling band having confronting ends separated by. a gap, a gasket of elastomeric material within said band having ends-meeting in a butt joint, a portion of .said gasket being bonded to said band with -at least 50% of said gasket and band being free and relatively movable with respect to each other and a lug unit attached to each band end. formed with at least one bolt hole, and at least one bolt passing through said holes provided with a nut enabling the lugs to be drawn together. In one embodiment (Fig. 5) the gasket butt joint is situated between the space 21 between the band ends, the gasket is secured to the band at the cross-latching 16 and a tapered cover member 26 having an inner radius equal to the outer radius of the gasket covers the butt joint and is also secured to the gasket. The ends of the band are shaped to form a recess 23, 25 to receive a main body flange 30, 42 of the lugs U, U, the bands being held in place by rods 41 passing through a rounded bead 40 formed in the band and received in a recess in the lug. The body of the lug contains bolt holes and is connected to torque arms 35, 47 and top body surfaces 33, 45 adapted to receive the under surface of the arm of the corresponding lug. In one embodiment the bolts have round heads 52 and have an oval neck portion to prevent the bolt being turned as the nut is tightened. In a further embodiment (Fig. 7 not shown) the bolt heads are oblong and are passed through oblong slots in one lug member and then turned through 90‹ to cause the bolt head to bear against the lug surface. A suitably shaped neck portion on the bolt prevents the bolt turning more than 90‹ (Figs. 9, 10, 11 not shown). The gasket is only secured to the band over a small area, which need not be adjacent the gap 21 but is held adjacent the band in sliding engagement therewith by U-shaped clips C (Fig. 7 not shown) which have a tang (20) holding the clip immovable with respect to the gasket.
