Abstract
1,068,014. Photo-elasticimetric apparatus. I. HAWKES and A. ROBERTS. Jan. 19, 1966 [Jan. 22, 1965], No. 2933/65. Heading G2J. A pressure gauge comprises a block 1 of birefringent material housed in a mount 18 having means for its connection to a source of fluid pressure whereby the block 1 is subjected to compressive stress exerted from opposite sides of its periphery, the changes in stress being observed with polarized light. The bi-refringent block 1 and the housing are both of cylindrical shape, the block 1 being mounted in a transverse cylindrical bore 19 in the mount 18. The mount 18 is also provided with an axial bore 20 which intersects the bore 19. Pressure members 21, 22 are housed in the bore 20 on opposite sides of the block 1. The open end 14 of the bore 20 provides access to a source of fluid pressure. The members 21, 22 are shaped to form surface or line contact with the block. A polarizer is placed coaxially at each end of the block 1 to permit observation of fringes within the block 1. The analyzer may be rotatably mounted about the axis of the block 1 to provide goniometric compensation, a scale indicating the degree of rotation in terms of the applied pressure. In modifications the fringes may be observed by reflected light in which case only one polarizer is necessary, a reflecting coating being located at the end of the block 1 remote from the polarizer and a quarter wave plate being arranged behind the polarizer. Also, direct contact between the fluid and the block 1 may be provided. In the gauges of Figs. 13- 15 (not shown) a plurality of fluid pressures are arranged to operate on a single block of birefringent material.
