Abstract

Zr or Zr base alloy is electrolytically etched by subjecting the metal to electrolysis as anode in a bath comprising HNO3 and a source of fluoride ions, the electrolytic process comprising a first stage carried out a current density and for a period of time such that there is formed on the metal an oxide film having a thickness of more than 6 microns and a second stage carried out at a voltage which is lower than that of the first stage, during which second stage the oxide film breaks away. Oxide films which were present on the metal initially break away with the anodically produced oxide. The temperature of the electrolysis may be from 10 to 25 DEG C. Different concentrations of HNO3 and fluoride ions may be used during the oxidizing and break-away stages. The two stages may be repeated.
