In apparatus for magnetically testing a wire rope for flaws in which a search coil is placed over the rope with A. C. energized, D.C. energized, or permanent magnets placed on either side of the search coil, Fig. 1 (not shown) the coil comprises a flexible core 6 of plastics tubing on which are wound five insulated wires 1.... 5. The wires are Interconnected in series by a plug and socket connector 9, 10 with the two ends brought out for connection to a meter. The assembly is enclosed in a flexible sheath. In use, a split, non-magnetic former, Fig. 3 (not shown) is placed over the wire rope and the coil assembly is wound on to this former and the plug and sockets connections made to complete the coil windings.
