Abstract
106,760. Moffat, J. W. Oct. 11, 1916. Electrode furnaces. - An unobstructed reducing- chamber 1 and an electrically - heated crucible 2 below it are rigidly connected so as to tilt together about trunnions 5 for tapping, while a stack 17 with which the chamber normally communicates remains stationary. O r e and flux, fed in through a central hole 25 in the roof of the reduction chamber fall in a shower through the chamber, carbonaceous material being introduced through side holes 23. Gases, burnt by air entering through holes 22 near the top of the chamber, escape by holes 10, 11 near the edge of the roof, so as not to disturb the stream of ore, which may, however, be caused to eddy by appropriately directing the entering air. Holes in a curved plate 13 just above the roof normally register with the holes in the roof and open into flues 15 leading to the chamber 16. The plate 13 may be sufficiently large to close the holes in the roof when the furnace is tilted. Four of the flues may pass through the floor of this chamber and two through a side wall, to reduce the size of the chamber required. A funnel 20, raised bv a lever 21 or otherwise when the furnace is to be tilted, directs the ore into the feed-hole 25 from a preheater 18, connecting the chamber 16 and stack 17. The preheater, which may be of the rotary-tube type, is charged by a hopper 19. A cover 12 for the crucible is preferably similar in size and construction to the roof of the reduction chamber, to allow of standardization of bricks. Six electrodes 3 may be provided. Large and small spouts, for slag and metal respectively, are arranged at opposite sides of the crucible, which is provided with two toothed sections 7 meshing with worms on connected shafts. Specification 3715/10 is referred to.
