Abstract
1,067,551. Reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 25, 1963 [Nov. 29, 1962], No. 45219/62. Heading G6C. In a pressurized water nuclear reactor, for marine use, refuelling is effected by obtaining access to the core through the removal of a plate forming the support for the upper ends of the fuel elements. The plate is positioned above the core at a distance such that it is subjected to a low intensity neutron radiation. It may therefore be withdrawn from the pressure vessel without the use of a coffin. Each element is formed of a number of fuel rods supported in a vertical, rectangular section tube of zirconium alloy. Thermal expansion of the tube is permitted by a sliding joint at the upper support and spring loading of the tube on to its lower support. The cooling water is circulated upwards through the fuel tubes, and downwards through heat exchangers in the annular space between the core and the pressure vessel inner surface.
