A brake mechanism 14 in a gravity conveyer having free-running rollers or sets of wheels 12 comprises two rollers or sets of wheels 16, 18 which are interconnected for simultaneous rotation in such a way that their peripheral speeds are different, the rollers or sets of wheels 16, 18 being spaced apart by a distance less than the length X of each article 10 being conveyed. The article 10 may be a carton, box, crate or pallet. As shown, two brake mechanisms 14 are provided, the rollers or wheels 16, 18 of which have sprockets 20, 22 interconnected by chains 24. The rollers or wheels 16, 18 need not be adjacent to each other and the sprockets and chains may be replaced by pulleys and belts. The rollers or wheels 16, 18 may be of different sizes, the interconnection being of a 1 : 1 ratio. They may be mounted in a yoke pivotally connected to the main frame of the conveyer and tiltable either manually or mechanically so that only one of the two rollers or sets of wheels contacts the articles 10, the brake mechanism being then inoperative. The yoke may be spring-loaded to urge the rollers or wheels 16, 18 slightly above the rollers or wheels 12.
