Abstract

A gas chromatograph includes at least one element having a gas channel whose width is substantially greater than its height, its width also increasing from inlet to outlet, so that a constant pressure is maintained in the channel. The element may be the sample injector, the column or the detector. Columns may be made from plates of Cu, Al, cupro-nickel alloys, stainless steel, light alloys, precious metals, glass, ceramics or plastics, by cutting rectilinear curvilinear, spiral or U-shaped grooves using mechanical, chemical, electrolytic, electrocrosion, ultrasonic or moulding techniques and then covering over the grooves with another plate. Thus a spiral-shaped capillary column of length 60-100M may be engraved in a plate 30cm x 30cm. If the plates are thin, the grooves can be made by drawing or stamping. Preferably the width to height ratio is 100 to 2:1. The grooves may be filled with adsorbent either before or after the plates forming the column are joined. The plates may be joined by welding, brazing, or gluing. The elements may be heated or cooled by forming a planer printed circuit on one plate e.g. a base plate 65 having grooves 68 and 69 and a lid 66, has planar heating elements or frigatrons 70 and 71 covered with insulating material 72 and 73, the grooves being filled with an inert support retaming the stationary liquid phase. A catharometer detector may be constructed according to the invention wherein one wall of the channel incorporates a planar resistor in the form of a printed circuit.
