Abstract

A strong, dimensionally stable fibreboard comprises mineral-wool fibres bonded together with a binder comprising kraft fibres coated with a synthetic rubber. The synthetic rubber used may be a butadiene-styrene copolymer, a butadiene-acrylonitrite copolymer, neoprene, an isoprene rubber, a homopolymer of butadiene, or a homo- or co-polymer of a homologue of butadiene. The kraft fibres may be pretreated with cationic melamine-formaldehyde resins before the addition of latex, or they may be treated with alum and then neutralized with ammonia, or the latex may be added to untreated fibres, and precipitated by then adding alum. The board is made from a mixed slurry, which may be made in any of three ways: (1) the kraft fibres are slurried in water, the synthetic rubber is deposited on them, and the mineral fibres then mixed in; (2) the kraft fibres and mineral fibres are formed into a slurry and the kraft fibres of this mixed slurry then coated with synthetic rubber; (3) the kraft and mineral fibres are slurried separately, the synthetic rubber added as a latex to and precipitated onto the fibres of the kraft slurry, and the two slurries then mixed. Clay, to serve as a filler may be added to the slurry or one of the slurries, and may be coated with synthetic rubber. Starch may be added as an additional binder to the slurry or one of the slurries. The board obtained may be used as an acoustic tile or fireproof panel.
