Abstract

1,066,845. Vibration dampers. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. March 18, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13236/63. Heading F2S. A machine comprises a structure which includes at least one columnar member 7 having one portion fixedly mounted and an unsupported portion extending therefrom. A vibration damper device which includes a damping mass 23 is mounted on the unsupported portion of the columnar member 7 for movement in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the columnar member 7. Friction damping means are arranged to damp relative movement between the damping mass 23 and the unsupported portion of the columnar member 7. In the construction shown, the damping mass is normally centred about a cap 18 of the unsupported portion by four, equispaced, spring- loaded plungers 25. The friction damping means comprises a plate 19 and a spring-loaded ring 22 mounted one on each side of the damping mass 23 and each being provided with a friction lining 24. The spring loading of ring 22 may be adjusted by screws 27. Two further vibration damping devices (Figs. 1, 4, not shown) are mounted in a hollow head (13), one device for each column (7). Each device comprises two spring cantilever rods (42) which carry at their ends a damping mass (41) of annular shape. A slide block (44) actuated by a manually operated screw (47) moves along the rods to adjust the effective length of the rods (42) and thus the frequency of the assembly is varied. The screw (47) and an opposite handed screw-thread (48) for the second vibration damper are part of a rod (45) which passes through both damping masses (41) and a bearing block (46). The base of the machine, which is for material fatigue testing, houses a vibration generator, a test piece being connected between the vibration generator and a central anchorage (12) of a beam (8). The beam (8) is clamped to the columns (7) by a tapered collet (9) and a screwthreaded clamp ring (10) and is raised and lowered by a power winch (14).
