Shrouded rotor or stator blades in a turbine or compressor are mounted in at least one group, a number of blades in the group being stressed under non-working and working conditions to urge the individual shroud plates of the blades in the group towards the central blade or blades of the group so that adjacent shroud plates press against one another to effect vibration damping. In a group having four blades 1 to 4, the bodies 11 of the blades 1 or 1 and 2 are prebent in the direction of the arrow 9 and the bodies of the blades 4 or 3 and 4 are prebent in the direction of the arrow 10 so that in the assembled state the blades are urged in the direction of the arrows. The shroud plates of the end blades 1, 4 are spaced from the blades 5, 6 in adjacent groups by means of shims 16 between respective blade roots. The gap between adjacent groups can be omitted if the contacting surfaces of the shroud plates are inclined to the axial plane at an angle whose tangent is greater than the coefficient of friction of the surfaces. In this case the blades receive a torsional as well as a bending prestressing on assembly. In modifications, the prestressing of the blades is achieved by circumferentially shortening certain of the blade roots of a group relative to the shroud plates or by lengthening appropriate shroud plates. Alternatively, the circumferential thickness of mounting elements between adjacent blade roots may be adjusted. The complete blade ring may form a single group, in which case an appropriate gap is left between the shroud plates somewhere on the ring. Different numbers of blades may form a group within any one blade ring.
