Abstract

A catalyst for the hydrogenation of a ,b -unsaturated aldehydes or ketones or of unsaturated fatty acids or fatty acid esters to produce the corresponding unsaturated alcohol comprises a "Raney" (Registered Trade Mark) alloy consisting of Al 1-60% the remainder being Cd and Cu such that Cd is present from 1 to less than 4% of the remainder (see Division C7).ALSO:A method for preparing an alloy catalyst comprises melting a mixture of aluminium copper and cadmium to form an alloy consisting of Al 30-70% the remainder being Cd and Cu such that Cd is present from 1 to less than 4% of the remainder, solidifying the molten alloy, pulverizing the solidified alloy which is then treated with an aqueous alkaline solution and water washed. The alloy catalyst, which is preferably heated in hydrogen or an inert gas at 250 DEG -350 DEG C, then contains 1-60% of aluminium. The catalyst may be used for the hydrogenation of a b - unsaturated aldehydes and ketones or for hydrogenating unsaturated fatty acids or fatty acid esters to give in each case the corresponding unsaturated alcohol.ALSO:Rancy Cu-Cd catalysts are prepared by dissolving Al with alkali from a Cu-Cd-Al alloy and crushed to 2 to 3 mm. particle size. The catalyst may have a surface area of 5 to 70 m2/gm.
