Abstract
A stabilising composition of a fire-extinguishing foam comprises an aqueous solution of a cationic quaternary ammonium surfactant and an anionic polyelectrolyte, in which the concentration of the dissolved ingredients is such that the solution is storage-stable but will develop a precipitate on dilution with 20 volumes of water within half-an-hour at room temperature. Preferred quaternary ammonium surfactants contain at least one C12-C18 aliphatic group; the associated anion may be bromide (preferred) chloride or sulphate. Surfactants exemplified are cetyl and lauryl trimethyl ammonium bromide, cetyl pyridinium bromide and lauryl trimethyl ammonium chloride. Suitable anionic polyelectrolytes are proteins, alginates, gum arabic, soluble salts of lignosulphonic acid, and polysaccharides. A monomeric alcohol such as i-propanol, t-butanol, ethylene or hexylene glycol, glycerine or pentacrythritol may also be present as an expansion promoter.
