Abstract

1,065,954. Metal working presses. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. Sept. 2, 1964 [Sept. 3, 1963], No. 36016/64. Heading B3H. A piston 4 is moved within its cylinder 3 by a propellant charge disposed in a plurality of cartridges 2 which. are fired in a sequence of successive stages. The piston is of particular use in a press for forming metal components. Small and large size cartridges 2 may be used and preferably the large size outer cartridges are ignited first by -means of an electrical timing device 8 having a contact 9 moving in a direction C. In another embodiment, Fig 6 (not shown), the time of firing is controlled by movement of the piston itself. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), pre-ignition of the later stage cartridges is prevented by valve caps placed on top of the cartridge chambers. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the piston 4 is stepped to blank off the ports from the second and third stage cartridge chambers 2b, 2c which are disposed radially. An axial cartridge 2a initiates the stroke. Various numbers of cartridges can be used and fired successively so as to maintain the gas pressure on the piston substantially constant.
