Abstract
A method of protecting metal surfaces liable to chemical attack by an electrodeposition bath containing nickel salts or chromium salts prior to electrodepositing nickel and/or chromium upon them, in which the cleaned surface is both alkaline-etched and acid dipped and subsequently immersed in an acid 'coating' metal phosphate solution to form a thin electrically conductive adherent deposit of metal phosphate. The alkaline etching is preferably followed by the acid dipping, and the surface may undergo these two treatments more than once. The surface is preferably first polished, degreased and cleaned with an alkaline cleaning solution containing 1/2 -6ozs alkali per gallon by immersion therein for 1-10 mins. at 90 DEG -210 DEG F. The alkaline etching solution may contain 2-10ozs/gall of a mixture of alkaline salt of sodium and potassium, the surface being etched therein for 15 secs. to 2 mins. at 120-180 DEG F. The acid may contain between 5% v/v and 30% v/v of nitric acid, and the surface is dipped therein for 15 secs. to 2 mins. at ambient temperature. The acid coating metal phosphate solution is preferably a nitrite-accelerated zinc phosphate solution of acid content between 0.5% and 6.0%. The surface is preferably rinsed between each stage of the invention.
