Abstract

1,065,746. Transducers. CHESAPEAKE INSTRUMENT CORPORATION. May 29, 1965, No. 22944/65. Heading H4J. A hydrophone, which is compensated for effects of acceleration, comprises a cylindrical aluminium tube 23 hermetically closed at both ends by piezo-electric discs which are electrically connected in series so as to respond only to required pressure signals in the range 50 to 500 cps., the tube being filled with silicone oil which is in restrictive communication with oil contained in a neoprene casing 14 surrounding the tube, Fig. 1 (not shown). As an alternative, Fig. 3 (not shown), a neoprene diaphragm 88 may enclose the free face of one of the discs 34, to define a compartment 91 which is filled with silicone oil in communication with the oil in tube 76 via capillary tube 48 and the whole arrangement is then inserted in an outer casing 75 containing castor oil. The discs preferably comprise a supporting aluminium disc 41 having lead-zirconate titanate discs 43, 44 mounted on either side thereof although a single piezo-electric disc and supporting disc or a pair of piezo discs without a support may be used. The electrical leads for the piezoelectric discs are connected to feedthrough connectors mounted on the discs or on a flange on the tube which supports the discs. The silicone or castor oil acts as a transmission medium for the incident pressure waves.
