Abstract

The invention comprises an X-alkylaryl sulphonate, wherein X is a cation which forms a compound with the alkylaryl sulphonate having a water-solubility of at least 5000 parts per million, said sulphonate having been formed by sulphonation of a cracked petroleum stream which boils within the range of from 300 DEG F. to 610 DEG F. and which has an aromatics content of at least 30% by weight, and by subsequent neutralization of the sulphonated stream. Specified cracked petroleum streams are distillate or gas oil streams produced by thermal or catalytic cracking such as light cycle gas oil, thermal cycle oil and cracked distillate power fuels. Specified cations are alkali metal cations, other metal cations such as Mg, Ca or Sr; and non-metal cations such as NH4 or an amine.
