Abstract
In a process for recovering hydroxyethylcellulose from scrap hydroxyethylcellulose film coated with a hydrophobic resin, a slurry consisting of particles of film on aqueous sodium hydroxide is passed through a mechanical shearing device, wherein the particles of film are further subdivided and the hydroxyethylcellulose is dissolved, and separating the resulting hydroxyethylcellulose solution from the undissolved resin particles. The shearing force applied is preferably such that the temperature rise of the dispersion is 10-30 DEG C., the temperature of the sheared dispersion not exceeding 30 DEG C. during the shearing operation. In examples, hydroxyethylcellulose (4% ethylene oxide) film coated with polyvinylidene chloridepolyvinyl chloride resin is subdivided in a hammer mill, slurried in chilled (5 DEG C.) 5-7.6% NaOH and passed through a high-shear mixer. Particles of resin are removed by centrifuging, and the solution of hydroxyethylcellulose reused in film formation.
