An electric resistance welding device comprises a primary frame, an electrode mounted on the frame, a movable frame shiftable on the primary frame between inoperative and operative positions, spring means urging the movable frame to the inoperative position, a movable electrode unit including a lever pivoted to the movable frame and yieldable means resisting pivoting of the lever. In one embodiment a fixed frame (20), Fig. 3 (not shown), carries an electrode (25) and on parallel rods (23) slidably supports a movable frame (28), the frame (28) being urged upwardly by a spring (35) and downwardly by a pedal connected cable (38). A lever (50) pivoted at (51) to the movable frame carries an electrode (56) on one arm and at the end of the other arm engages a switch (70). A lever (40) is pivoted to the movable frame at (41) and is pressed by an adjustable spring (43). Between the levers (40), (50) is arranged a member (61) adjustably mounted on a screwed rod (60), the rod being journalled in a member (62) pivoted at (63) to the frame (28). The rod is turned by a knob (64) and by a chain connection (69) between the rod (60) and a counter (66) on indication of the position of the member (61) is available. In operation the member (61) is adjusted to provide the required pressure applied by the electrode (56), the work is placed on the lower electrode and the pedal (36) is depressed to lower the upper electrode. When the upper electrode contacts the work further movement of the frame (28) causes the the lever (50) to pivot against the spring (43) and the switch (70) to be actuated. A capacitor is then discharged into the primary of a welding transformer, the secondary being connected to the electrodes. In a modification the movable frame (406), Fig. 12 (not shown), is slidable on posts on the fixed frame (400) and carries an arm (425) pivoted to the frame and carrying an adjustable electrode (434). A lever (417) is pivoted to the frame (406) at (418), is spring urged by an adjustable spring (423) and journals a screw threaded rod (420) on which is adjustably mounted a roller unit (465) which presses against the lever (425). A counting device (428) is coupled to the rod (420). The pivoting of the lever (425) about the pivot (426) against the spring (423) operation causes a switch (463) to be operated which commences the supply of the welding current.
