Comminuting apparatus comprises a hollow cylindrical stator 20 closed at both ends in which are inlet and outlet means 24, 28 a rotor 21 coaxially in the stator having a rotatable shaft 25 carrying whirlers on radial arms 26 secured to the shaft and arranged in at least two axially spaced apart groups 1..4 and is 16. In operation, material, e.g. limestone, is introduced into an air or gas stream and comminuted by the turbulence fields set up by the whirlers, which are made of perforated or honeycomb metal. The space 27 between the groups of whirlers serves as a quiet non-turbulene zone in which the air/gas currents may be braked by projections from the walls of the stator. The whirlers may alternatively be arranged on contra-rotating shafts.
