Abstract

Mattresses may be reduced in volume, for transport and storage, by enclosing them in a bag made from air-impermeable and flexible material, sealing the bag end through which the mattresses were inserted, evacuating the bag through a hole in the bag, and finally sealing the hole, e.g. by heat sealing. Again, the bag may be provided with a one-way valve to facilitate the evacuation. Binding together several individually packaged mattresses and covering them with hessian, to reduce the risk of tearing, prevents the mattresses from being restored to their original shape should air enter any of the bags.
