[Also in Division B8] A liquid fuel dispensing nozzle has a nozzle tube 2 fitted with a tubular plug end 5 formed with diametrically opposed recesses which respectively house a sound transmitter 8 and a sound receiver 9, the arrangement being such that when the nozzle is correctly positioned in the filler tube of a fuel tank the acoustic coupling between the transmitter and receiver is large enough, by virtue of reflection from the filler tube walls, to provide a control signal from the receiver output to operate a solenoid valve 3 in the fuel feed line whereas in open air the signal is insufficient to open this valve 3. A surrounding; protective sleeve 4 is formed with apertures 11 to allow the passage of sound. The nozzle is fitted with a Piezo-electric ceramic element 12 which couples on oscillator and an amplifier such that when the nozzle end and hence the element 12 are immersed in liquid the oscillations of the element are damped and the valve 3 is caused to close thereby to prevent overfilling of the tank. Alternatively, the transmitter 8 may form a part of a bridge circuit forming the level detecting device. Means is provided to prevent opening of the valve 3 when the nozzle is stored in its boot.
