Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A method of manufacturing a continuous sheet of wood veneer having a decorative figure and substantially free from defects comprises forming a solid block including compressed glued veneer laminations 4 and a central solid core 7 of a similar length to the laminations, the laminations surrounding the sides of the core, mounting the block in a rotary cutting machine, and slicing from the block with the blade 2 of the machine a continuous sheet 6 of wood veneer so that the portion of the block which remains unsliced between the chucks of the machine includes the core. The laminations of the block may be V-shaped with the V extending along the length or across the width of the block so that the blade of the cutting machine acts in a plane intersecting at least two of the laminations to produce the decorative figure. In another method, the laminations are flat but the block is mounted in the cutting machine with its axis of rotation inclined to the layers of the laminations, so that the blade again acts in a plane intersecting at least two laminations. The block is formed by gluing together a number of laminations around the central core with the grain and flower running in the same direction. The laminations may all be of the same wood or of a variety of different woods and may be artificially coloured.
