For making figured veneers, blanks are prepared by combining solid wood or veneers or other materials in various ways, or by twisting or bending veneers or solid wood, and then turning the blank. The blank shown in Fig. 1 consists of a piece of solid wood 1 and pieces 2, 3, 4 of veneers glued together, the pieces 2, 3, 4 being arranged with their grain running in different directions. As shown in Fig. 3, veneers of increasing size are built up on a veneer of small radius of curvature or on a solid core. In Fig. 5, a blank 5 of solid wood has oblique holes in which plugs 6, 9 made from veneers glued together are placed ; the plug 6 may be of solid wood or be made up from veneers or be of non-wooden material and is preferably in two halves 7, 8, with the grains running at an angle, so that a leaf design is forward in the cut veneer. A filling material, such as plastics or metal, may also be applied to the blank.
