Abstract

Coating compositions comprise an organic solvent and a preformed mixture of a film forming vinyl halide polymer and an amino organo (hydrocarbonoxy) silane of formula <FORM:1064064/C3/1> where Z is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical which may contain an amino, hydroxy or hydrocarbonoxy substituent, R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical R11 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, the <FORM:1064064/C3/2> group is attached to the silicon atom through at least three successive carbon atoms of the group R1, a is 1, 2 or 3, b is 0, 1 or 2 and (a + b) is 1, 2 or 3; an amino organo siloxane consisting of units of formula <FORM:1064064/C3/3> or a siloxane containing 0.1 to 99.9 mole per cent of said units and 99.9 to 0.1 mole per cent of units of formula <FORM:1064064/C3/4> , where R111 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and C is 0, 1, 2 or 3. The vinyl halide polymer may be a homopolymer of vinyl chloride or vinyl fluoride, or a copolymer thereof with vinyl alkanoates and benzoate, vinylidene halides, alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacrylates, dialkyl maleates, dialkyl fumarates, alkenyl cyanides, tetrahaloethylenes, unsaturated amides, aralkenes, alkenes, alkenyl alkyl ethers, alkenyl alkyl ketones and alkenyl heterocyclic compounds. Extensive lists of suitable silicon compounds are given. The mixtures may be dissolved in an organic solvent or dispersed in a plasticizer to give a plastisol. The polymer and silicon compound may be dry blended before incorporation in the solvent or plasticizer, or the silicon compound may be added to a latex of the polymer and the resulting dispersion spray dried. The compositions may be applied to metals and cured to form adherent coatings. Examples describe coating compositions comprising (I and II) polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, d -aminopropyl siloxane, titanium and antimony oxides, dioctylphthalate, diisobutyl ketone, toluene and mixed hydrocarbons; (III-V) polyvinyl chloride and d -aminopropyl siloxane; (VI) polyvinyl chloride, titanium and antimony oxides, dioctyl phthalate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, methyl isobutyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone, hydrocarbons and d -aminopropyl triethoxysilane, aminoethylaminopropyl trimethoxysilane or aminopropyl-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane; polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, titanium and antimony oxides, dioctyl phthalate, diisobutyl ketone, toluene, hydrocarbons and (VII) d -aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and (VIII) (CH3)2C[C6H4OCH2CH(CH)OSi <FORM:1064064/C3/5> <FORM:1064064/C3/6> or <FORM:1064064/C3/7> (IX) polyvinyl chloride, dioctylphthalate, didecyl phthalate, titanium dioxide and d -aminopropyl triethoxysilane; (X) vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, titanium dioxide, aluminium powder, dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, antimony oxide and d -aminopropyl triethoxysilane; (XI) polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, titanium and antimony oxides, dioctyl phthalate, diisobutyl ketone, toluene, hydrocarbons and aminoethyl aminopropyl triethoxysilane; (XII) polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, diisobutyl ketone, xylene, naphtha and d -aminopropyl triethoxysilane; and (XIII) copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or dibutyl fumarate, titanium dioxide, dioctyl phthalate, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene and d -aminopropyl triethoxysilane, aminoethyl aminopropyl trimethoxysilane or aminopropyl aminopropyl trimethoxysilane.ALSO:Coating compositions comprising an organic solvent and a preformed mixture of a film forming vinyl halide polymer and an amino organo (hydrocarbonoxy) silane of formula <FORM:1064064/B1-B2/1> where Z is hydrogen or monovalent hydrocarbon which may contain an amino, hydroxy or hydrocarbonoxy substituent, R' is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, R'' is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, the <FORM:1064064/B1-B2/2> group is attached to the silicon atom through at least three successive carbon atoms of the group R', a is 1, 2 or 3, b is 0, 1 or 2 and (a+b) is 1, 2 or 3; an amino organo siloxane consisting of units of formula <FORM:1064064/B1-B2/3> or a siloxane containing 0.1 to 99.9 mole per cent of said units and 99.9 to 0.1 mole per cent of units of formula <FORM:1064064/B1-B2/4> where R''' is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and C is 0, 1, 2 or 3; may be applied to metal substrates and cured to give adherent coatings.
