Abstract

A synthetic strand useful as, or for making, ropes, twines, cords, or strings, comprises a twisted, elongated film of synthetic, polymeric material having a high degree of molecular orientation so as to provide a large number of lines of potential or incipient cleavage in a direction parallel to the longitudinal edges of the film and slit, parallel to said edges, along some but not all of said lines of potential or incipient cleavage. A film is cut to the desired width, drawn 8-20 times to fully orient it and passed into a gas jet so that the turbulence of the gas causes the film to slit along some of its lines of potential cleavage. p The jet may have a slot or circular-shaped film opening. The slit film is then twisted-e.g. on a ring spindle-and/or combined with other slit films which are twisted together and heat set. The film may be formed of a crystalline polyethylene, polypropylene-which may contain a black pigment for ultraviolet degradation resistance and an autioxidant for heat resistance-or polyallomer.
