Abstract

A process for producing copolymers having a carboxyl content of more than 0.2 equivalent of carboxyl per 100 grams of copolymer, comprises polymerizing an alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acid with a conjugated diene monomer in an acid medium using an azo-type free radical-generating catalyst and an alkylated quaternary ammonium salt emulsifier. Azobisisobutyronitrile and cetyl trimethyl ammonium halide are exemplified. Preferred monomers are acrylic or methacrylic acid and butadiene. A third monomer may be used which may be methyl methacrylate or styrene.
