Abstract
Acrylic rubbers are prepared by polymerizing one or more acrylate or methacrylate esters of alkanols having up to 8 carbon atoms together with a minor proportion of dicyclopentadiene in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator. The monomers may also include up to 30% by weight of acrylonitrile. Polymerization is preferably effected in an aqueous medium in the presence of a suspending agent such as sodium polyacrylate. The initiator, e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile or benzoyl peroxide, is desirably added stepwise during polymerization, dissolved in a solvent such as benzene, methanol or xylene. The rubbers can be cured by heating in the presence of sulphur and/or a peroxide, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate or 2,5-bis (t-butyl-peroxy) - 2,5 - dimethylhexane. Conventional rubber stock adjuvants may be included in the curing composition, e.g. reinforcing agents, fillers, plasticizers, antioxidants, age resistors, resins, dyes, pigments and fungicides; adjuvants exemplified are carbon black, stearic acid, zinc oxide and methyl zimate (a zinc derivative of a thiocarbamic compound).
