Abstract

1,062,933. Photographic silver halide emulsions. ILFORD Ltd. Nov. 26, 1964 [Oct. 30, 1963], No.42854/63. Heading G2C. A photographic gelatino silver halide emulsion is made by forming such an emulsion in which the silver halide grains have a polyhedral shape, i.e. have a number of sides exceeding eight, and are in the size range 0À5-2 microns, and adding to the emulsion at a stage not later than the digestion stage from 1 to 500 g of polyvinyl alcohol per gram mole of silver, the said polyvinyl alcohol having a molecular weight of 10000 to 30000 and containing at least 25% residual acetate, calculated as vinyl acetate. The silver halide may be iodobromide or chlorobromide. The emulsion has a good covering power on development with agitation, and is compared with similar emulsions in which the polyvinyl alcohol is absent or is added after the digestion stage, or is added before the digestion stage to fine or coarse octahedral grain emulsions.
