Abstract

A surgical prosthesis comprises a porous non-absorbable fabric (e.g. film, mesh or straight or Y-shaped tube) coated with collagen, the pores of the fabric being free of collagen. The fabric may be made by weaving, knitting, braiding or chrocheting filaments or strands of a copolyer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene terephthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene, polythene, polypropylene, cotton or silk. The coated fabric may be prepared by treating the fabric successively with a solvent (A) for hydrophilic materials and a solvent (B) for hydrophobic materials, spraying or dipping the fabric with a dispersion of swollen collagen fibrils, removing the collagen from the pores by blowing inert gas through, or perforating, the fabric, neutralising and then tanning the collagen. The solvent (A) may be water or an aqueous solution containing sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, a condensate of nonyl phenol with ethylene oxide, or cetyl trimethyl-ammonium chloride; and solvent (B) may be methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl or methyl n-propyl ketone, dimethyl, diethyl or ethyl methyl ether. The collagen may be dispersed in water, aqueous cyanoacetic acid, methyl alcohol or aqueous solutions of perfluoroacids. The tanning agent may be chromium, formaldehyde or polyhydroxyphenols.ALSO:A surgical prosthesis comprises a porous non-absorbable fabric (e.g. film, mesh or straight or Y-shaped tube) coated with collagen, the pores of the fabric being free of collagen.
