Abstract
1,062,831. Electric measuring and indicating apparatus. AUSTIN CROMPTON PARKINSON ELECTRIC VEHICLES. March 30, 1966 [Feb. 11, 1965], No. 5888/65. Headings G1J, G1Q and G1U. For continuously monitoring the state of charge of a battery on load an ammeter 6 sensing the load current is combined with a volt meter 2 sensing the battery e. m. f. The ammeter drives a scale drum 4 and the voltmeter pointer 3 can be read against a fixed scale 5 calibrated in volts and also against the scale 7 on the drum 4, which is calibrated in fractions of charge life. The drum 4 also has a scale 4A calibrated to measure current, but in terms of hours of life which the measured current would allow. Thus in Fig. 1 the voltage is indicated as (approximately) 1. 8V, the discharge current as '3 hours' and the state of charge as (approximately) ¢ - i.e. sufficient to allow ¢ X 3 = 1¢ hours further running at the indicated current. It is possible to associate the scale 4 with the voltmeter and the pointer 3 with the ammeter; or to replace the pointer 3 by a second drum surrounding the drum 4, this second drum being transparent and carrying an oblique or spiral cursor line Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). By extending the ammeter and voltmeter scales to the other side of zero, the same instrument may be used to monitor battery conditions during charging.
