In a camera in which processing liquid 44 is released and distributed between the layers of a multilayer film assembly 22 when this assembly is longitudinally advanced between the bite of compression-applying means (in this case rolls 18, 20), a plate 10 having a curved edge 10c is positioned adjacent the rolls so as to subject an area of the film to a non uniform bearing force just before it enters the rolls, the plate 10 thereby encouraging the liquid 44 to flow towards the sides of the film. Theplate is inclined with respect to a plane normal to the plane containing the rolls' axes, thus causing the centre portion of the edge 10c to exert a greater force on the film than do the outer portions, the centre portion being of greater radius than the outer portions. The longitudinal marginal areas of the film pass between clips Fig. 1 (not shown) and portions of a bar 32 and are thus held together to prevent the escape of the liquid 44 during the spreading operation. This causes the film to bulge at its centre, and a bearing member 38 is provided above the film to hold the film layers against undue separation. If the film is sufficiently rigid, member 38 may be omitted. The edge 10c may be located above or below the bite line of the rolls 18, 20 which are held apart by a flange 28 to provide a minimum spacing 29 through which the film passes.
