Abstract

1,062,614. Automatic control of power factors. BLACKSTONE & CO. Ltd. April 10, 1964, No. 14930/64. Heading G3R. In an arrangement for controlling the power factor of an alternator having an automatic voltage regulator, a square waveform having a mark/ space ratio dependent on the power factor is compared with a reference square waveform to produce an error signal which is applied over an amplifier to the regulator which thereby operates to reduce the error to zero. As shown, voltage pulses derived from the alternator by way of a transformer 1, a diode 3 and a transistor 4, and current pulses derived over a transformer 2, a diode 19 and a transistor 10 are applied to the opposite sides of a bi-stable circuit 7, 8 which thus produces a square waveform have a mark/ space ratio dependent on the phase relationship between the voltage and current pulses. This waveform is applied over an amplifier 15, 16 to a resistor 17 which is also supplied with a reference wave-form generated by a circuit 18, 19, 20, 21; this reference signal may be derived from another alternator or a grid network, and its mark/space ratio may be adjusted by varying a resistor 22. If the power factor of the alternator differs from that set by the reference circuit an output forming an error signal is obtained from the resistor 17. This error signal is applied over an amplifier 24, 25 a power transistor 27, and a variable choke 29 to the coil 32 of an automatic voltage regulator associated with the alternator, the arrangement being such that the excitation of the alternator is varied in dependence upon the error signal whereby the power factor is maintained at the desired value.
