A single calling oscillator 60 (not shown) at a calling station interrogates a plurality of remote stations, e.g. in turn over respective telephone lines, and oscillators at the remote stations send frequency data signals back. When the interrogating frequency is detected at a remote station, a gating amplifier passes digital and analogue frequency data signals back over the same telephone line pair to corresponding recorders at the calling station through filters at the calling station common to all the remote stations.
