Abstract

Crude aqueous cakes of azo pigments having a molecular weight above 500 are dehydrated and simultaneously purified without an intermediate drying step by mixing the crude aqueous pigment cake with an organic liquid boiling above 100 DEG C. and which is inert to both the pigment and water, heating the mixture to above 100 DEG C. to distill off substantially all the water and then removing the organic liquid from the pigment by filtration, decantation or centrifuging; the resulting pigment being washed if necessary and dried. After substantially all the water has been removed by distillation, the water-free suspension may be heated to 100 DEG to 270 DEG C. before the organic liquid is removed. Organic liquids used include aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic mono- or poly-nuclear hydrocarbons which may be hydrogenated, halogenated hydrocarbons, nitrohydrocarbons, aliphatic and aromatic amines, heterocyclic amines, alcohols, diols, ethers, ketones, sulphoxides, and fatty acid amides. Mixtures may also be used. The examples describe the use of xylene; dimethylformamide; 1,2 - dichlorobenzene; N,N - dimethylaniline; toluene and pyridine.
