Abstract

1,061,897. Forming sachet type packages. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. March 6, 1964 [March 15, 1963], No. 9567/64. Heading B8C. [Also in Division F2] A tubular mandrel 30 (Fig. 6) free to float laterally inside a tube former 4 prevents stress lines forming in a web during the formation of a tube therefrom. Material to be packaged is fed into the tube through the mandrel 30, and the tubular package is then sealed transversely at intervals to form individual packages. The tube former 4 is provided with a resilient magnetic backing member 14 used in heat sealing together the longitudinal edges of the web (as in Specification 891,519) and, as shown, the mandrel 30, which may be made of sheet metal, is spot welded to this. Alternatively, the mandrel (18), (Fig. 1, not shown), may have a longitudinal strip removed from it so as to clear the member 14, and be provided with a flange (22) which rests on the web as it passes over a collar 2 on the former 4. The mandrel (18), which may be of synthetic resin, may be held in position by its own weight, or by spring attachment means.
