Abstract

1,061,645. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 13, 1964 [May 25, 1963], No. 20977/63. Heading B7C. A pneumatic tyre 5 is provided with a waterdeflecting annulus 1 having a stiffening in the form of a substantially inextensible ring 6 at its radially outer periphery, the annulus being located in a stowed position in contact with or close to a sidewall 10 of the tyre, and with means for deflecting at least part of the annuls into a water deflecting position. Said means comprises an annular diaphragm 9 located between the annulus 1 and the sidewall 10, the peripheries of the diaphragm being sealed to the annulus 1 to form an inflatable chamber. This chamber is connected by a flexible tube 11 to a pipe 13 and thence to a source of fluid pressure. The diaphragm may be replaced by an annular inflatable bag. The annulus 1 comprises two layers of rubberized parallel steel cord fabric, and is gripped at its radially inner bead 3 between the wheel rim flange 8 and the adjacent tyre bead 4.
