Abstract

Apparatus for fatigue testing of gear teeth comprises an oscillatable lever 26 and means for rigidly securing a gear 47 under test with one of its tooth flanks in contact with the lever at a point on the flank at or near the tooth tip. The gear 47 under test is clamped between brackets 34 which are adjusted so that a stop 36 engages a tooth flank as near as possible to its root whilst a projection 30 on the lever 26 contacts another tooth as near as possible to the tip thereof (see Fig 2). The lever 26 is mounted on leaf springs 25, the free end of which has a lug 38 and thrust pad 31. A spring balance is connected between the lug 38 and an eyebolt 49, the latter being moved vertically by a wheel 43 to apply via spring 25 a predetermined load to the tooth under test. A sleeve 17, Fig. 3 (not shown) on a shaft 13 is then adjusted until the thrust pad 31 engages a roller bearing 21 at its maximum eccentricity. The spring balance is then removed and replaced by a spring 39. When a motor 11, Fig. 1 (not shown) connected to shaft 13 is started, the eccentrically mounted roller bearing causes the spring to oscillate and thus apply rapidly repeated loads to the tooth until it breaks. When the tooth breaks, the spring 25 is pivoted upwards to contact switch 44 to stop the motor. The number of times the load was applied before breaking is ascertained from a revolution counter 45, Fig. 1 (not shown).
