Abstract
Compounds of the formula R1R11CH.CHX.CHO, in which R1 and R11 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and X is halogen, are prepared by reacting R1R11C=CHX at 75-140 DEG C. under a pressure of at least 65 atmospheres with a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a ratio by volume of 0.4 to 7, in the presence of at least 1 mol. per cent, based on halo-olefine, of a cobalt carbonyl catalyst, the minimum partial pressures of carbon monoxide and hydrogen being 40 and 25 atmospheres respectively. Examples prepare 2-chloropropionaldehyde, 2-bromobutyraldehyde and a -chlorohydrocinnamaldehyde from vinyl chloride, 1-bromopropene-1, and o -chlorostyrene respectively.
