Abstract

106,141. Owens, J. S., and Vermehr, J. M. de M. May 12, 1916. Ordnance breech mechanism; machine guns.- Relates to bomb-throwing devices and consists in a magazine-fed device in which a barrel extension houses a recoil spring and hydraulic buffer, the breech-block being adapted to recoil in the extension and being held in the rear position, if desired, by a pawl. A firing-lever depresses the pawl, and the firing-pin is cocked and released automatically during the return stroke of the breech-block. In the example shown, the barrel 1 has an opening 2 through which bombs are introduced from the magazine 3. The breech-block 4 slides in the barrel and carries a central spring- operated striker 5 and a cocking-lever 7 which is pivoted at 8 and passes through a slot in the striker. The toe a of the lever 7 engages a slot 10 in the barrel. A pawl 12 is pivoted at 13 in a recess 11 in the breech-block and is adapted to engage a stop 36 on the barrel extension and the toe 31 of a check spring 30. A tubular tail-rod 15 is attached to the breech-block and provided with a piston 16 working in an oil cylinder 17 which has a taper spindle 18 to enter the tube 15 during recoil. A spring 20, compressed during recoil, is provided to return the breech-block to the firing position. The trigger mechanism comprises a lever 22 pivoted at 23 and retained in normal position by a spring 24 which also acts upon a pawl 26 pivoted at 27 in a slotted part 25 of the lever 22. A transverse pin 28 on the pawl 26 engages ledges 29 struck up from the housing.21 and arranged to move the pawl to the left as it rises, thereby releasing the spring-controlled pin 33 which also is engaged by the pawl. In operation, a rod is first introduced into the barrel and the breech-block is pressed rearwards until the pawl 12 is retained by the stop 36 and the toe 31 of the spring 30, and the toe a of the cocking- lever 7 is in the slot 35. A bomb falls from the magazine 3 to the gun breech in front of the breech-block. The lever 22 is now raised, and the pawl 26 lifts the pin 33 which, in turn, disengages the pawl 12 from the stops 36, 31 so that the breech-block moves forward. The cocking-lever 7 is moved to the right to cock the striker by the toe a engaging the inner surface of the tube 19, and the striker is released when the toe a reaches the slot 10. Means may be provided to hold up the pin 33 when it is desired to make the gun automatic.
